What is PEPPOL?
PEPPOL, which stands for Pan-European Public Procurement On-Line, is a framework that standardises the way organisations exchange electronic documents such as invoices, purchase orders, and shipping notices.
PEPPOL creates a common digital language that allows companies and public bodies to communicate seamlessly regardless of their internal systems or location. By using the same set of technical standards, PEPPOL removes the complexity of multiple file formats, country-specific rules, and incompatible platforms.
Originally established in 2008 by the European Commission to improve public sector procurement processes, PEPPOL has since evolved into a global network used by both private and public sector organisations across Europe, Asia, and beyond. It’s now a key driver of interoperability in invoicing and Procurement, helping organisations transition from paper-based and manual processes to fully digital, automated document exchange.
How does PEPPOL work?
To join the PEPPOL network, businesses connect using a Certified Service Provider’s PEPPOL Access Point. Once registered, the business receives a unique PEPPOL ID, which functions as a digital address for sending and receiving documents.
With PEPPOL built on global standards, businesses only need to configure a single connection to exchange documents with any other participant on the network. This eliminates the need for custom integrations or multiple data mappings for each trading partner.
Once connected to the PEPPOL network, a business can instantly communicate with thousands of other organisations worldwide, all through one secure and standardised connection.
Why join the PEPPOL Network?
- Global interoperability: PEPPOL enables seamless document exchange between businesses and governments worldwide, reducing complexity in cross-border trade.
- Increased efficiency: Automating document exchange through PEPPOL minimises manual entry, reduces errors, and speeds up invoicing and payment cycles.
- Compliance ready: Many countries are adopting PEPPOL as the standard for e-invoicing, particularly for business-to-government transactions. Being connected ensures ongoing compliance with evolving regulations.
- Cost savings: By reducing administrative overheads and manual processing, PEPPOL helps businesses save time and money.
- Future-focused: As e-invoicing becomes the global norm, adopting PEPPOL ensures your business remains connected to an ever-expanding network of trading partners.
